Ministry of Health 5k - More than a Race

Kingston, Jamaica…November 2005 – The Ministry of Health (MOH) 5K scheduled for Sunday, November 13 at Emancipation Park will be more than a 5K run and 2K walk. It will also include a health fair under the theme “Celebrating Health – Join the Move for Life.”
The 5K signals the start of the second half of the “Jamdammers & the No Violence One Love Grand Prix Series”, formerly known as the “Road to Reggae Marathon.” Dancing, yoga and tai-chi are some of the other activities planned, underscoring the Ministry’s vision of promoting a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Says Race Director, Alfred “Frano” Francis, “as organizers, the Jamdammers Running Club of Kingston is pleased to be associated with this initiative”.
According to Francis, the level of participation in the four-race Grand Prix Series so far has been encouraging. Three hundred and thirty four (334) runners completed the course for the Puma 5K and 261 completed the ‘‘Upliftment 5K”. Mr. Francis added, “We expect increased participation for the MOH 5K. Unfortunately Hurricane Ivan forced us to cancel the event last year, but in 2003 approximately 600 runners participated.”
After two events, Wainard Talbert and Notoya Goule are the leaders with a maximum of 42 points each. The points standing are as follows:

Participants in the 5K which begins at 3:30p.m., will travel along Knutsford Boulevard, Trafalgar Road, Waterloo Road, West Kings House Road, Constant Spring Road and Half Way Tree Road, and end at Oxford Road.
The 2K begins at 3:00p.m.and will follow Knutsford Boulevard, Trafalgar Road, Holborn Road, Chelsea Avenue and Half Way Tree Road, ending at Oxford Road.
Mr. Francis said participants are reminded to “eat a proper pre-race carb load diet and pay special attention to hydration before, during and after the race.” He also said participants should wear proper attire as “black long sleeve shirts and sweat pants are not appropriate especially in 90 F temperature.” Appropriate announcements and reminders will be made in the media and participants are urged to read the material that will be provided prior to signing the entry form for the race.
The Burger King 10K, the final in the four race series will begin at the Burger King, Portmore branch on Sunday, November 20 at 3:30pm. The Grand Prix champions will be crowned at the end of the race.
